ABOUT PILATES

The Pilates method of body conditioning is a unique system of stretching and strengthening exercises developed over 100 years ago by Joseph H Pilates . Pilates originates from Germany where he was born in 1883. He was a sickly child and turned to exercise and athletics to cure he’s ailments . He constantly developed and strengthened he’s body through a range of practises that included , gymnastics , skiing and diving and he started to develop he’s understanding and practise of body conditioning and he’s method .

Working with injured soldiers in the First World War he developed equipment that included Pulleys and resistance and he started to invent equipment to help rehabilitate injured clients . In 1923 he emigrated to the USA and settled in New York where he set up a studio . He would become a pioneer in his field attracting the attention of many renowned members of the Dance Community including Balanchine who sent his dancers to work with Pilates . Before his death in 1967 he had trained several other instructors to teach his method, ensuring that it would continue to develop and gain popularity in the future.
